Beware of These Top 3 Scams: Pig Butchering, AI Voice Cloning, and the Classic Bank Phishing Scam

With technology advancing at a rapid pace, scammers are using increasingly sophisticated methods to exploit unsuspecting individuals. Here’s a look at three popular scams affecting people today, from fake investment schemes to AI-driven impersonation and the all-too-familiar bank phishing scam. Knowing about these scams can help protect you and your loved ones from financial and emotional harm.

1. Pig Butchering Scams: The Rising Threat of Fake Investment Schemes

What Is It? Pig butchering scams involve scammers posing as friendly, interested acquaintances or even romantic partners. Once they’ve built a rapport, they lure victims into fake investment schemes, usually centered on cryptocurrency. Victims are told that they can earn high returns, and initially, the scam may even appear legitimate with some fake “profits.” However, once the victim invests more money, the scammer vanishes, taking their money with them.

How Many People Are Affected? Pig butchering scams are on the rise. According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), tens of thousands of victims have been affected globally. In 2022 alone, Americans lost over $429 million to pig butchering scams, according to IC3’s latest reports. The true number of cases is likely higher, as many victims are too embarrassed to report these scams.

Warning Signs:

  • Unexpected messages from strangers or acquaintances pushing investment advice.

  • Claims of guaranteed high returns, especially in cryptocurrency.

  • Urgent requests to “act fast” to not miss out on “profit.”

2. AI Voice Cloning: When Scammers Sound Just Like Your Loved Ones

What Is It? AI voice cloning scams are emerging as a chilling new way for scammers to gain access to people’s money. Using a few seconds of a person’s voice (which can be pulled from social media or videos online), scammers use AI to replicate that voice, making phone calls or leaving voicemails that sound nearly identical to the real person. These scams often involve pleas for money, such as “I’m in trouble and need cash immediately,” exploiting the victim’s emotions and urgency to respond.

How Many People Are Affected? Though voice cloning scams are newer, they are spreading fast. In a survey by McAfee, one in four adults reported encountering some form of AI-driven voice scam, and in 2023, voice cloning scams cost Americans over $11 million in just a few months. Experts predict that these scams will continue to rise as AI tools become more accessible.

Warning Signs:

  • Unexpected calls from family members or friends requesting urgent money transfers.

  • Requests for payment via untraceable methods like cryptocurrency or gift cards.

  • Unusual behavior or urgency in the caller’s tone that feels out of character.

3. The Classic Bank Phishing Scam: “This is Your Bank. Your Account Has Been Hacked.”

What Is It? This classic scam has been around for years but is still one of the most effective. Scammers impersonate a bank representative, contacting individuals and claiming their account has been hacked. They’ll ask for sensitive information to “secure” the account, or they may direct victims to transfer funds to a “safe” account, which is actually controlled by the scammer.

How Many People Are Affected? Phishing scams cost Americans over $10.5 billion in 2022, making it one of the top cyber threats. Tens of thousands of bank customers are targeted every month, with hundreds falling victim daily. According to the Anti-Phishing Working Group, these scams are more sophisticated than ever, with scammers often using legitimate-looking caller IDs and email addresses.

Warning Signs:

  • Calls or messages claiming urgent action is needed to prevent financial loss.

  • Requests for personal information like account numbers, passwords, or Social Security numbers.

  • Instructions to transfer money “for security purposes.”

How to Protect Yourself from These Scams

  1. Be Skeptical of Unexpected Contacts: If someone you don’t know, or someone acting out of character, contacts you with investment opportunities or urgent requests for money, proceed cautiously.

  2. Verify Requests: If you get a call from a “family member” in distress or your “bank” asking for immediate action, hang up and call back using a verified contact number.

  3. Secure Your Accounts: Enable multi-factor authentication (MFA) for all financial and social media accounts, and be cautious of the information you share online that could be used in AI-driven scams.

By staying aware of these scams and practicing vigilance, you can protect yourself and your finances from those looking to take advantage. Remember, legitimate organizations and family members will understand if you take time to verify their requests—don’t let urgency cloud your judgment.
